Handbags 101, my top picks for this season and a look inside my very own tote

I am a handbag freak! There I said it and I’ll say it again, I am a HUGE handbag freak! I’m willing to guess (bet you the price of a Chanel) that many of you feel the same. I often find myself looking for my new carryall and searching online for inspiration. I’ve been known to surf designers websites, Pintrest and recently my favorite Rue La La’ s handbag 101 style guide. I send my clients there when they are in a quandary as to which handbag style best suits their needs. They break down the fundamentals of each style and provide care instruction for keeping your bag as fresh as the day you got it. If you are in the market to purchase a designer handbag they also offer tips to check for authenticity of each brand. If you are going to spend your entire paycheck (no judging here, I’ve done it plenty of times) on a bag make sure it’s legit!

Rue La La Bags

Rue La La HandBag 101

Yes, I can admit (cough) that I watch reality television and I LOVE to see how others live and a peek inside their personal lives. Likewise, I find it interesting to see the contents of peoples bags and US Weekly portrays it well in their pages that show the inside of celebrity handbags. Some of you carry light (yeah definitely not me, heck NO), however I (especially during daytime hours) side on carrying everything including the kitchen sink, because you just never know!

As a stylist and mother…A peek inside my acheter viagra own bag:

Chanel Bag

TOTE: Large Chanel Shopper, WALLET: Phillip Lim, MAKE-UP CASE: Medium Louis Vuitton make-up case, PEN and “A” Initial KEY RING: Alexandra Knight, SUNGLASSES: Ray Ban, BANGLE: J Crew

What are must have items: I totally admit that I am a walking pharmacy. I am not just talking about Advil, at any given time I have small travel sizes of MY essentials; Cortisone cream, Neosporin ointment, Batman Band-Aids, hand sanitizer, hand cream, boogie wipes and deodorant. Ok, before you judge me let me tell you that I have a six year old boy with two left feet and I experiment with several anti-aging products that leave my face a bit charred at times (thus the reason for ointments and creams).

Other key essentials: I swear one quarter of my paycheck goes to Bobbie Brown makeup (I continue to wait for a personal hand-written thank you from her). I’ve purchased enough Bellini #14 high shimmer gloss to definitely circle the globe and cannot move without it! Ray Ban aviator sunnies is another key ingredient that makes up my well-balanced purse. Also at any given time, I have jewelry scattered in my bag just in case I feel the need to add a bit more glamour to my workout wear before heading into the grocery.

Skull Clutch

Skull Clutch: Alexander McQueen

The most random things floating in my bag: As a stylist at any given point, I find binder clips at the bottom of my bag, a survival tool for photo shoots to properly fit a garment or a quick hem on a clients shopping excursion. I can also find Matchbox cars and green army men parked in between the pockets of my bag dropped in by my son. As he needs HIS key essentials too!

Do I change my handbag: I change my handbag about as many times as the wind changes direction. I truly believe the purse helps complete my entire look and therefore should change to match the outfit, either day to night or seasonally. See my above clutch for a typical evening out.

Drum roll please….the bags I am now coveting and hope to add to my ever growing museum size collection of purses (hey we all have vices).

I love the crisp bright red color of this tote and a great size to toss in your entire life!

Butterfly Clutch

Only carry clutches at night, I am a butterfly girl and I’m a sucker for anything that contains that motif. This one is perfect and high on my list of must haves!

Black YSL Bag

Bag: Saint Laurent Small Emmanuelle Fringed Bucket Bag

My I gotta have it, must get it, can’t wait ANY LONGER…

Bag: Saint Laurent Small Emmanuelle Fringed Bucket Bag

Why, because in my world it’s just (insert a word that would make you mother blush, here) COOL! So not practical but who cares, sometimes fashion is not practical and I’m fine with that.

I would like to thank Rue La La for asking me to be a style partner for this special Blog “Handbag 101 and What’s in Yours.” I am beyond honored to represent such an outstanding fashion destination. My top (easy to wear) Fall/Winter 2014 trends:

With the drop in temperature and fall upon us, there is no better time to experiment with this season’s trends. Last March I had the opportunity to attend several fashion shows, as well as view them on live-stream comfortably at my desk (thanks to Unlike past years, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the runway was buzzing with very “wearable” trends.

Candace Moto Jacket

Jacket: Sam Edleman / Skirt: Zara / Booties: BCBG / Scarf: bought in France Bangles: Vintage and J. Crew

The Moto Jacket: Made a return again this season. It has become the “go to” jacket for transitional weather and a closet staple. This season you will see a multitude of versions, an array of colors, cropped, color blocked and even unique details like embroidered options.

How to wear it: The moto jacket is an essential piece that is very versatile. It can be worn with denim, a lace dress, silk jumper, pencil skirt or even an elegant cocktail dress. I’ve seen it and it can be done! There is really no wrong way to wear this jacket.

Sneakers: Veja available at

The Athletic Sneaker. Yup, you read it right! Your feet can be happy as designers have declared sneakers the footwear of the moment. Like spring, we are seeing a return of athletic sportswear. For fall, sneakers are getting glam with glittery embellishments, metallic leathers, and thicker soles. You can still wear your platform sneaker.

How to wear it: It’s completely acceptable to wear these with your denim as well as cute causal skirts and jumpsuits.

Fur: Orange Fur Blanket Coat by Wunderkind / Top: Lucas Nascimento / Denim: J Brand / Boots: Aperlai (all available at

Fur, Fur and more Fur: Fur is pretty inevitable for Fall/Winter fashions. This season designers experimented with color, new shapes and adding design motifs.

How to wear it: If you are a lot like me, you could wear fur anywhere and anytime in all shapes and colors. However, if you do not prefer the real deal, faux fur options have never been better.

Jacket: Leopard Wool Coat by Carven (available at

Leopard Prints: This animal print showed up everywhere on the runway. It was presented in very ladylike silhouettes that can be donned in the office or on weekends.

How to wear it: Make sure your look is sophisticated and elegant, stay away from cropped tops, ultra minis and tight fitted dresses. The idea is to show the skin, not show off your skin! If wearing a loud print is not your thing, try it in an accessory like a clutch or shoes.

Dress: White Tartan Dress by J.JS. Lee / Shoes: Paul Andrew (all available at )

Plaid: Plaid has made a huge resurgence this season and not just for the preppy or the lumberjack er lumber-jill . This timeless print is getting a fresh new look with modern silhouettes. If you head into a department store, chances are high that you will see plaid in every shape and form from casual tops to dresses, handbags, coats and even shoes.

How to wear: The print can be a bit overwhelming and over power your look. To simplify try wearing a plaid shirt with denim or toss a scarf over your all black ensemble. Care to go bold? It’s fashionably acceptable to even throw on more than one plaid, just make sure the colors are within the same tone.

Coat: Edun / Pants: Edun / Top: Edun / Sandals: Eugene Riconneaus (all available at

Wrap Coats (aka Robe Coat): Simply chic and very flattering. This is a transitional piece more for fashion less for warmth. The collar on these coats can be overwhelming, so purchase one in a simple color such as black or camel. This will ensure that you are wearing the coat and the coat is not wearing you! Put one on and channel your inner Hugh Hefner.

How to wear it: Streamline and team with thin turtleneck, slim cut trousers or skinny denim. This coat can be worn day or night, paired with a heel or flat.

Boots: Over the Knee Nina Boots by Inga / Sweater: Edun / Denim: J Brand stocking jeans (all available at

Over the knee boot: This boot style was flying low on the radar last year however know they are all over the street. Many shoe designers incorporate a version into their Fall/Winter line. This trend is for the fashion daring individual!

How to wear it: If you want to ease on into this trend pair your boot with the same colored tights, skinny denim or legging. The key is to make sure your undergarment/pants are tight fitting and fabric is not bunching at the top of boot. If you are a bit more daring (not for the faint-hearted), wear with a skirt and show a bit of leg. This is a statement and a very sexy look.

Coat: Cedric Charlier / Skirt: Cedric Charlier (all available at

Color Trend: This season’s color combinations are not typical for fall hues. Pastels (mint green, pedal pink and light purple) are very on point, as well as Sangria (think red with deep pink undertones, shown in my jumpsuit) and Aluminum (strong grey). Rounding out the color for the season is the reoccurrence of royal blue.

How to wear it: Designers are representing pastels in UNTYPICAL pieces such as outwear and coats that is ultra feminine and modern. Keep the rest of your outfit basic with more familiar seasonal hues such as black, grey, camel or brown.

Jumpsuit: Reformation / Jacket: Sam Edleman / Sunglasses: Tom Ford / Watch : Ulysse Nardin / Booties: Michael Kors

Jumpsuit: One of the biggest trends for the fall and another pick up from the spring is the jumpsuit. This season the silhouette is tailored with an emphasis on the waist which might include a belt or a tie. Unlike the spring where we saw jumpsuits in floral patterns, now is the time to purchase one in a solid color. The jumpsuit comes in two different styles, the tapered leg and the wide leg. Choose the one that suits best for your shape.

How to wear it: The jumpsuit is a perfect substitute for the little black dress, its fun and unexpected. Wear it with a bootie and a moto jacket for a cool hipper look. Pair with a tailored blazer and heels for a retro 70’s feel.

I would like to give a BIG shout out to Avenue 32! They provided me with additional photos for this blog. A closet staple must have–the classic white button down

The classic white button down…a must on my list and hopefully after reading this, yours too!

The white button down is a classic closet must have. It’s a clean, timeless and versatile staple that can be worn day or night and all year round. Very few closet pieces can do the same. Lets face it, many styles come and go, but the perfect white button down will continually remain en vogue. It’s also on every stylist and designer’s top ten must have list. This perfect wardrobe essential can be paired with a pencil skirt and pointy pumps (great for boardroom meetings). Or you can mix it with ripped/distressed denim and heels for a casual look. One of my favorite ensembles (and I have worn it many times) is coupling your white button down with a sophisticated formal skirt. Fabulous and would make Mr. Oscar de la Renta proud! How could we forget Sharon Stone’s memorable Oscar moment when she stepped out in her then husband’s Gap white button down tucked into her lilac Vera Wang evening skirt. Now that look was an award winner (even if she didn’t walk home with the golden statue). This past year, Julia Roberts catapulted a new trend by wearing her Dolce and Gabbana creation that paired the white shirt under a black strapless gown and adored with rhinestone belt (beyond stunning)! Just goes to show you can’t go wrong no matter how you wear it. How about trying it as a beach cover up! The combinations are endless!

White shirt - black skirt

Skirt: Carolina Herrera couture / Shirt: Anne Fontaine / Shoes: Jimmy Choo / Belt: Gito Englewood / Clutch: Elaine Turner / Necklace: Meghan LA / Fur: private label / Watch: Harry Winston

How to wear

  • Looks effortlessly chic by rolling messily up the sleeves and half tucked in denim or another casual pant and a cool belt. Toss on some pearls for some added classic glamour.
  • Since it’s a closet staple and can be worn a multitude of ways, this should be a piece you invest in. The cotton should be of good thread count and the buttons should be made of out shell. One of my all time favorite companies when looking for a new white button down is Anne Fontaine, And of course just head to your local Gap.
  • Fit is essential here, you must make sure it fits perfect to your frame. Make sure when you button your shirt, there are no gaps, gathering or awkward folds and the buttons line up straight.

Pants: Marc Jacobs / Cardigan: Love Token / Shirt: Banana Republic / Clutch: Lauren Merkin / Shoes: L.A.M.B / Ring: Kwiat Jewerly / Watch: Hublot

Pants: Marc Jacobs / Cardigan: Love Token / Shirt: Banana Republic / Clutch: Lauren Merkin / Shoes: L.A.M.B / Ring: Kwiat Jewerly / Watch: Hublot

  • If you choose to invest in a few different styles. Try one with ruffles, French cuffs or in another fabric such as silk or satin.
  • The white button down is a perfect plain canvas, now is the time to add a pop of color, with a statement necklace, add a bow tie (why not!) or pull out your favorite silk scarf and toss it around your neck.

Please note, your crisp white shirt should have no stains, wrinkles, yellowing under the arms or cheap buttons. If so, that needs to be relegated to the trash quickly! The key is to look sophisticated not like you slept in it!

As always I hope I have inspired you to look outside your comfort zone and try something new. Empowering YOU makes me beyond happy.

How to add a little night time sparkle in the day time hours.

You know who loves sequins..this girl! Up until a few years ago, I would only don my sparkles for a holiday party and after 7pm. Upon changing my own thinking, I now love incorporating sequins in my style all year round and all day long. Wearing in the daytime hours is unexpected, totally chic and adds instant glamour to any day. I own many pieces in a multitude of levitra cost in uk colors and sizes (the large ones are called paillettes and are often a runway staple).

Candace Kristin - Sequin Daytime

Blazer: Paper Crown / Shirt: Splendid / Skirt: BCBG / Timepiece: Zenith Lady Piolet / Ring: Carrera y Carrera / Necklace: Carrera y Carrera / Bracelet: J. Crew

How to incorporate sequins into the day:

  • Mix prints and textures to your sequin ensemble. The secret to making it work is keeping your key pieces in the same color tones/palette. Choose a sequin or paillette that is less glittery and more of a matte finish.
  • Sequins are already “dressed” so make sure you tone down the rest of your outfit with simple cotton or denim. Wear a sequin jacket or top over a rolled boyfriend jean. Try pairing a simple cotton t-shirt and denim jacket with an embellished skirt.

Shirt: Michael Stars / Sequin Jacket: custom made / Denim: Mother / Belt: Diane von Fustenberg / Timepiece: Ulysse Nardin / Clutch: Give / Necklace: vintage

  • Complete your look by adding a simple accessory. Scrap the J.Crew statement rhinestone necklace and pair with a simple/ light-weight one.
  • Leave your sky high heels at home. If you are trying to make your sequins look more casual wear a lower heel (kitten heel), bootie or flat. This will make your look street wear ready!
  • When trying to master this very chic daytime look, now is not the time to pull out your sequins body hugging tank dress or micro mini. Grab your 9 to 5 friendly pieces such as skirts, loose tanks and a spangle embellished sweater. This will help ensure you are mastering the hip look with out looking like you are ready for a nightclub at noon.
  • Still a little intimidated in adding a large key piece? Why not try a sequin bag, clutch or sparkle shoe in the afternoon.

Faux Fur: BCBG / Shirt: Splendid / Skirt: BCBG / Timepiece: X / Ring: Carrera y Carrera / Necklace: Carrera y Carrera / Bracelet: J. Crew / Sunglasses: Tom Ford

It’s my duty that I provide you with the fashion don’ts (AKA the fashion 911). While you are in the search for a new “sparkle” piece to add to your wardrobe make sure the sequin is of good quality. A poorly constructed and cheap looking sequin is just bad news and looks sloppy. Who wants to wear a piece of clothing that starts falling apart before starting the day?

As always I hope I have inspired you to look outside your comfort zone and try something new. Empowering YOU to look and feel great makes me beyond happy.

Spring 2014 Menswear Trends (well the wearable ones!)

It is no surprise that men’s fashion is a sweet spot for me. I have the privilege to work with many fantastic male clients. Men are becoming more experimental than ever with their personal style and hiring people to help them navigate through the “fashion” waters. Designers are responding by producing contemporary takes on traditional designs. In turn, menswear has come a long way in the last several decades, and I LOVE IT!

Jacket:Tallia / Shirt: Bugatchi / Belt: Trafalgar / Pants: Faconnable / Shoes: Cole Haaun

Jacket:Tallia / Shirt: Bugatchi / Belt: Trafalgar / Pants: Faconnable / Shoes: Cole Haaun / Timepiece: Ulysse Nardin | Fashion were provided by Sal Lauretta for Men, in Midland Park, NJ, (201-444-1666) and Photography: by Eric De Rosa Photography

Here are a few of my favorite trends for the season:

1.) Color Explosion: designers have showcased bright hues in their staples from sweatshirts and t-shirts to more formal ensembles. Suiting has gone from grey scale to full-blown color like indigo blue, green and pastels.

- How to wear it: if opting to try a colored suit, make sure it is a lightweight wool or cotton/linen blend. Tone down your shirt and shoes with neutral color.

2.) Floral/prints: borrowing from the women, flowers and graphic prints have made their way into menswear this season. The floral motif for the men however is much darker and bolder, less bright and delicate. A much more masculine approach to the petal trend.

- How to wear it: Rather than grab the stripe or checked shirt, reach for one with a floral pattern. Wear it with denim or under a suit.

3.) Double-Breasted Jacket Modernized: Hugh Hefner must be stoked, as his favorite blazer has made its return. Scrap the matching pants and just wear the jacket. Buy one in an interesting color with ticket pockets.

- How to wear it: Fit is key, it must be well tailored following your natural V-shape and shorter to give it a hipper edge. This will ensure you look on trend and not like you pulled it out of the back of your closet from the 80’s. Unlike that memorable decade shoulder pads are NOT a must here.

4.) Seersucker Modified: Jamie Foxx nailed the new seersucker trend at the recent Kentucky Derby (worth it to Google the image). His jacket was a mix of several colors in the classic fabric. This is a suit to have fun with and not a boardroom powerhouse look, but a nice clean summer one.

- How to wear it: Fit is key here too in order to nail this trend. Leave the bow tie at home, ditch the socks, add a color v-neck t-shirt and pair with a cool pair of canvas sneakers. If the classic light blue and white seersucker loved by southern lawyers not your thing, try the navy on navy pinstripe.

Jacket: Tallia / Pants: AG / Shirt: Psycho Bunny / Shoes: Donald J. Pliner

Jacket: Tallia / Pants: AG / Shirt: Psycho Bunny / Shoes: Donald J. Pliner / Timepiece: Giuliano Mazzuoli | Fashion were provided by < Sal Lauretta for Men, in Midland Park, NJ, (201-444-1666) and Photography: by Eric De Rosa Photography[/caption] 5.) The Self-Cuffed Pant: the cuff is on a steady rise for this season. It can be applied to nearly anything from denim pants to shorts.

- How to wear it: make sure you start with a slim fit pant. You want this look to be fashionable and not that you are avoiding puddles.

The cuff should be 1-2 inches, rolled neat and just above the anklebone.

6.) Masculine Man Bags: no longer just a woman’s accessory, man bags are masculine, handsome and a great addition to a contemporary wardrobe. Now men do not need to shove crap in their pockets, it can be tossed into a great looking briefcase, tote, duffle or folio. There has never been a better time to invest in a bag that suits YOUR needs. However, I prefer a bag without a shoulder strap but rather with handles, a bit more modern. Please, whatever you do just don’t call it a man purse, very emasculating!

7.) Lapel Pins: many designers have incorporated this chic accessory into their collections. Lapel pins provide a great opportunity to stand out and achieve a look that is personal, fresh and original. It’s an occasion to make a fashion statement, show good taste and an eye for detail. I have seen many different variations of pins, from flowers, bows, sculls and gems. If you want to be very bold include a pin and a pocket square to your look.

Timepieces: Ulysse Nardin

8.) The Timepiece: sport/diver watch: meant to be waterproof while scuba diving in deep waters, but also great appeal for the man above sea level. Look for details, rubberized band, unidirectional rotating bezel and one or more sub-dials. This classic watch is making resurgence as it can be worn both dressed up or casual.

I hope I have inspired you gentleman, which I fully recognize it is hard to do! If I have done so, please message me or send me a picture.
